Making an Outrigger for your Canoe

For the past two summers we have been experimenting with a bamboo and styprohpone outrigger on our canoe. The purpose of this design is to allow us to sail, be more stable: thus more relaxing, and allow us to go in the ocean. We have used the canoe to sail in our local harbor with lots of success but have not had the time to take it further. With 3 people it handles waves quite well.

These photos are of us testing the outrig on Lake Winnipesaukee. We constructed the boat in less then 1 hour having braught only styrofoam, rope, a makeshift sail and about 8-9 bamboo sticks. So far the only drawback has been that the pontoon was made out of styrofoam which is not all that hydrodynamic, however we still managed to go atleast twice as fast as our friends could paddle their boat. ”homemade

Canoe Lake Winnipesaukee!

This weekend me and a few friends went on a trip to Lake Winnipesaukee.. The trip turned out to be a fantastic one. We got a chance to build and test our outrigger at night which performed flawlessly. The day was spent sailing around the islands and collecting blueberries. A great place to start your canoe voyage is from Melvin village. This towns has a few public docks with free parking and an overall provides very good access to the water.

White River, VT overnight canoe trip report

Read our latest review on the: White river, Vermont!

A Two day Trip from Gaysville to White river Junction.

Possibly the best canoeing river in NewEngland, just make sure you go early in the season so the water is high! Even going in Late May is so metimes too late. Our boats were just able to pass without scraping the bottom.

Spring is almost here

Spring is almost here! and so is River Boating Season. After one or two practice runs we planto head out on a full 90miles journey down the Allagash river. It should be a completely new experience considering that on all of our previous trips we never spent more then a full day out in the wilderness. The river is also supposedly one of the most wild and secluded on this coast.

Use our maps section to plan trips for this season. Check out our pictures of previous trips. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
