Overall river characteristics: The Connecticut river is very long, stretching 4 states from Vermont to CT. Overall the river flows slow and is quite wide. Water levels can change quickly due to its large drainage basin. The river is a good place to go out canoeing, in many places its so wide that the feeling is similar to that of a lake. There are probably 100;s of put-ins along its banks making it very accesable. A large portion of New England rivers are actually tributaries of the Connecticut. I have only canoed a small section of the river starting around White River Junction, VTThe first 6-7 miles of the river from White River Junction are pretty fast but with no rapids. After this the river greatly slows down and becomes more of a lake. However at parts it is very shallow, sometimes you can even touch the bottom while in the middle. The consistency is sandy and muddy so if you go swimming you will likely be covered by a small layer of so after.
